The Frenchman could be joined by another centre-back at Everton in the shape of Yerry Mina.

One of Mina's goals in Russian Federation was against Everton's England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to send a dramatic last 16 tie into extra-time.

The La Liga champions confirmed Mina's move for a fee of around £27 million, saying they had an option to buy him back. It is the best league in the world.

Mina played alongside Digne during his half-season stint at the Catalan club, and like the Frenchman, spent much of his time at the Nou Camp subject to the reserves.

Bernard, a 25-year-old capped 14 times by Brazil, was a free agent after his contract with Shakhtar Donetsk expired and said Portuguese manager Marco Silva played a big role in attracting him to the club. "When I found out about this opportunity and what the manager wanted out of me I was happy".

'I know about Everton's players and I look forward to being able to play with my new team. I have spoken a lot to the coach and I know his passion for Everton and determination to be successful.

Now Everton will work to make sure the deal is over the line, with the Premier League window closing at 5pm.

Mina has signed on a permanent five-year deal worth €30million (approx £27.2million), while Portugal worldwide Gomes has arrived at Goodison on a one-season loan.

'That's really why I made the choice - because of the confidence both the manager and the club showed in me'.

Silva has been desperate to bolster Everton's defence all summer and had been linked with a number of targets, such as Manchester United's Marcus Rojo and Newcastle's Jamaal Lascelles, but Mina was his top target.
