Premier League legend Alan Shearer has warned not to write off Manchester United's title chances, despite Jose Mourinho's despondent mood this summer.

A man now on the books of MLS side D.C. United said: "I am sure Jose (Mourinho) has been getting the team right". "The market closes today so there's time at least for me to stop thinking about it".

Premier League clubs have been hindered by the early closure of their transfer window whilst the rest of Europe continues to be active in replenishing their squads, a decision which Guardiola feels needs to be looked at.

"This is the first time it wasn't like that and maybe in the future it will be revised, I will start the season with the players that I will have all year".

Tottenham Hotspur became the first Premier League club since the summer transfer window began to fail to sign a single player but Mauricio Pochettino said he was happy for the club to "behave differently".

Pushed on whether there would be any ins or outs on Thursday, Mourinho added: "The information I have is no (nothing will happen)".

United had been hoping to sign a centre-back before the deadline but hope has faded in recent days. "That is my experience at Barcelona and Bayern Munich".

Sergio Romero, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Dalot, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic will all be unavailable for Friday's opener against Leicester.

The extension sees the Premier League rights remain on BeIN's roster of European soccer broadcast rights - which includes the top tiers in Spain, Italy, Germany and France as well as the Uefa Champions League and Uefa Europa League - in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

"My view is that first of all it is hard for me to believe that we finished second when I listen, when I read - not much but sometimes I do", the United boss said.

"So it's hard for me to understand or to feel or to believe that we finished second, which I keep saying that I - and sometimes it's also hard to believe - that I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues. I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues but I keep feeling the second last season was one of my biggest achievements in the game".
