Everton are also eyeing a move for the Chelsea defender, although they only want him on a season-long loan deal. Now, it seems they have set their sights on Chelsea outcast Zouma.

It looks like Mourinho has moved on to another potential target as L'Equipe claim Manchester United have joined Everton in holding talks with Chelsea over a deal to sign Kurt Zouma.

Zouma subsequently missed almost one season of football before he made his return to the pitch.

Should Zouma arrive in time then he could be eligible to make his debut against newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers in Everton's opening game of the new Premier League season on Saturday.

It might be hard for him to get regular playing time at Chelsea this season, so sending him out on loan makes sense.

The Toffees were extremely active on deadline day and addressed their centre back issues by signing Barcelona's Yerry Mina but are still keen to add depth to their squad in the form of Zouma. A number of defenders have been linked with the Premier League heavyweights as Jose Mourinho aims to solidify his backline for the upcoming season.

The Toffees made a late move for the 23-year-old on deadline day but had to wait until Friday to learn if their bid had been successful.

However, he has less than 32 hours to make that happens as this summer transfer window shuts on Thursday, August 9, by 5pm.
