The victor will replace term-limited Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican.

Whitmer will be on the ballot for governor in November.

After toppling incumbent Joe Crowley in the NY-14 primary, socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attempted to use her newfound publicity to secure more socialist victories, stumping for a handful of other Democratic candidates around the country. She beat Abdul El-Sayed, the former director of Detroit's health department, and Shri Thanedar, a wealthy chemical testing executive. El-Sayed especially courted the party's more liberal, pro-Bernie Sanders wing, as did Thanedar, who spent millions of dollars of his own money on his campaign. She will face Attorney General Bill Schuette, who defeated Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, state Sen.

"Gretchen Whitmer is a tough, determined, and proven leader, who will be an unrelenting champion for our middle class as the next Governor of Michigan", Michigan Democratic Party Chair Brandon Dillon said in a statement.

It was a high-stakes primary for a party that's hoping to ride a "blue wave" back to power in Lansing and is still grappling with internal fault lines exposed during the 2016 presidential election.

"Congratulations to Gretchen Whitmer on winning the Democratic nomination for governor in MI", said Democratic Governors Association Chair Gov. Jay Inslee. She's the right person to bring change to MI this November. Whether it's fixing Michigan's roads and bridges, fighting for universal preschool and debt-free community college, or cleaning up Michigan's drinking water, Gretchen will get it done.
