Just last week it was reported by unnamed sources close to Disney that Gunn's rehire was "unlikely".

Following back and forth reporting and rumors, a new bit has surfaced claiming that Disney, Marvel Studios and James Gunn are having "back channel" conversations which might lead to Gunn returning to his position as director of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3. Since then, the entire Guardians cast has come together in support of the filmmaker, with Dave Bautista going as far as asking to be released from his contract in the circumstance that they don't use Gunn's script.

We're nearly three weeks on from his dismissal, but the drama surrounding James Gunn's firing from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 doesn't seem to be slowing down any, and now comes word that Marvel Studios may be backing the filmmaker and hoping to persuade the Mouse House to reverse its decision. The report notes that there's "no clash or strong arming" between parties at the studios and that Marvel's "11th hour approach" to rescue their franchise is a long shot.
