CL Failure Could Lead To League Glory For Liverpool

Any hope with which Manchester United supporters woke up on transfer deadline day has quickly been quashed by Jose Mourinho.

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

"I told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane, I repeat and maybe tomorrow the reaction is the same: Pre-season hard when you don't have your players to work, that's as simple as that".

Pogba played a crucial role for Didier Deschamps' triumphant side in Russian Federation, and the 25-year-old star returned to United training on Monday ahead of Friday's opening Premier League fixture of the season against Leicester City.

"The reason why I want to tip Liverpool is that they're moving in the right direction", he said.

Pushed on whether there would be any ins or outs on Thursday, Mourinho added: "The information I have is no (nothing will happen)".

But he was quick to point out his United side were closest to runaway leaders Manchester City last season, even if they finished 19 points adrift.

Press Association Sport understands United have been keen to sign a centre-back, but Leicester's reluctance to sell Harry Maguire looks to have scuppered any move for the England star.

Whatever the explanation, the lack of new faces compounds issues surrounding the United squad heading into the Premier League season.

As far as the rest are concerned, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini are very unlikely to feature as they only returned to training on Monday. "They trained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today, so you can imagine they are not really fit and ready".

"Unavailable is Romero - he had a surgery after his injury before the World Cup".

"If they feel they can help us [against Leicester] - 20 minutes, 10 minutes, half an hour".

Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku made slightly early returns so could be involved on Friday, perhaps helping to boost the mood of a manager who has looked downbeat for much of the summer. The way in which United are being talked about this pre-season, it's as if they've got a load of bums playing for them.

Former Liverpool FC defender Thompson believes the Reds will finish second in the title race unless Manchester City lose their ability to score late goals.

"Like any big club, they need some silverware - in his first season at Old Trafford, 2016-17, Mourinho won two trophies - the League Cup and Europa League - but he won nothing last season".
