On Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the February 24, 2019, ceremony will feature a few additions - including a new category celebrating outstanding achievement in popular film.

Also, the 92nd Oscar ceremony in 2020 will air on the much earlier date of Sunday, February 9, presumably to battle complaints that the show's usual late-February or early-March date feels a little late.

Now the Popular Film category arrives to give even more weight during each ceremony to the biggest films of the year, at a time when movies like Black Panther in 2018 and Wonder Woman in 2017 are getting increasingly big pushes from their studios in an effort to earn some Academy gold.

The Academy Awards are making significant changes including the addition of a brand new popular film category, a decision criticized by some in the industry as a watering down of the quality of the ceremony. The statement reads: "To honour all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined)".

Will it make you more likely to watch?

Among the other changes approved by the board of governors are shifting the telecast date earlier in the year and taking some categories out of the live telecast.

The Academy of Motion Pictures just announced some changes to its annual Oscars event.

Regarding the changes, a letter was sent to the Academy board members offering: "We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world".

The Academy's motivation for extending honors to so-called popular films is a hope that the new award will help attract viewers.

The Atlantic's David Sims dubbed the new bracket "The Black Panther Memorial Award for Movie That We're Afraid Won't Get a Best Picture Nomination", while Vulture's Mark Harris deemed it a "special fake Oscar" for the first superhero film with a primarily black cast. For comparison, last year's ceremony aired in early March and the upcoming 2019 show is set for February 24.

In order to fit all the awards into the new 3-hour timeslot, certain awards will be presented during commercial breaks. The MTV Movie Awards?

Academy board members may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms, while officers serve one-year terms, with a maximum of four consecutive years in any one office.
