Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina are all on United's radar as the deadline encroaches and Atleti's Godin has now emerged a target for the Premier League giants.

As they cast around for last-minute additions - with the summer's transfer work only yielding Lee Grant, Fred and Diego Dalot so far - United have made a late move for Godin, according to Sky Sports News.

While he oldest of the lot Godin would be the cheapest due to his release clause.

But United appear to still be trying to bring in a top defender with attention suddenly turning to Godin.

United have left things late with the transfer window shutting at 5pm and Mourinho admitted he didn't think he would get a deal done today earlier on.

But Mourinho told reporters at the beginning of deadline day that he didn't anticipate any new arrivals at Old Trafford. I'm not confident, I'm not confident as the market closes today so it is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed.

'I will have to focus on the players I have in relation to this first couple of matches.

The Uruguayan centre-half would have been able to move for just £17.5 million this summer and it's easy to see why Jose Mourinho viewed him as a short-term solution to the problem in the heart of the Red Devils' back four.

"The information I have is no", he said. So I'm not counting it out.

"I think a lot of people are paying over the odds, that's the way football's gone".
