Mourinho has repeatedly expressed a desire to bring in additional signings throughout pre-season with a central defender top of his list.

Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Yerry Mina and Jerome Boateng were all major targets that look like failing to materialise for the frustrated United manager.

"So I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to this first couple of matches, maybe four matches because after Burnley there is national team and a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare people better, is to focus on players available so I'm not thinking about that list I give you, I focus on what we have". It is time for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed.

"I am not confident".

Mourinho recently vented his frustration about his club's lack of summer spending, with Fred the only big-money arrival. Ivan Perisic, the Croatia worldwide, also featured prominently on Mourinho's wish list but it now seems that United's summer transfer business will be restricted to the arrivals of Fred, the injured Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant, signed from Stoke City as a third-choice goalkeeper.

On the eve of the new season, which starts with United's clash against Leicester, Mourinho also claimed that finishing second last season, 19 points behind champions Manchester City, was "one of the greatest achievements" of his career. 'When I listen, when I read, it's hard to believe we finished second because you are capable of making people who finish second (sound like we) were relegated.

"We have only seen him when he has appeared in front of the TV cameras this summer and heard what he has told the media, and I suspect he will behave very differently on the training ground with his players".

Mourinho will have to decide whether or not to pick Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini against Leicester after they returned from post-World Cup break on Monday.

"In Championship Manager you can just press a button", he stated.

Mourinho did confirm that Alexis Sanchez, who was a highlight for United over pre-season, is fit and firing though.
