State biologist Greg Skomal got an up-close look at a great white shark during a recent excursion off Cape Cod when one of the apex predators that researchers had been observing breached the water right beneath him, exposing its large teeth.

"Did you see that?"

In the video of the incident, the boat's captain screams, "Holy crap!"

A researcher poised to tag a great white shark got more than he bargained for over the weekend, when the shark leaped at his feet with its jaws open. "Did you see that?" he says as he immediately returns to looking for the shark. "It came right up and opened its mouth right at my feet", Skomal, who is the senior fisheries scientist for the state Department of Fish and Game and leads the Massachusetts Shark Research program, exclaims. The video was filmed off the coast of MA and shared on Facebook by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy about 16 hours ago.

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries said the video was shot with a GoPro attached to a painter's pole.

It's not clear why the shark breached or whether this was a type of attack behavior. While encounters like this one are rare, this video shows that they're certainly possible. "White sharks are wild and unpredictable animals", they said, warning everyone to stay vigilant while in water.

The encounter occurred just off the beach in Wellfleet on Monday, July 30, and recorded on a camera mounted on the flying bridge of King's boat Aleutian Dream.
