German Tatjana Maria will now get a wildcard spot in the main draw and faces Alize Cornet of France in the first round.

Serena Williams is present and joins top-seed Simona Halep, recent Wimbledon victor Angelique Kerber, defending champion Elina Svitolina as well as Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens to name a few. "Fans were very much looking forward to seeing her in action", tournament director Eugene Lapierre said in a statement. "But beyond the disappointment, the tournament, as a whole, remains a high-level competition". Shortly after the win, she announced that she was pregnant and didn't play for the rest of the tennis season. "There are exciting matches in store from the outset".

The 36-year-old Williams was the runner-up at Wimbledon last month. That was just her fourth tournament since returning to the tour after having a baby in September and dealing with a health scare related to blood clots.
