Elmarie Wendel, who played landlady Mrs Dubcek in the USA comedy '3rd Rock From the Sun' has died at the age of 89.

Fellow actor Jim Beaver also honored the actress on social media following her passing.

No cause of death was given.

The actress' daughter J.C. announced the sad news via her public Instagram page, paying tribute to her mother with a throwback photo in view of her 268 followers.

The series, beginning on NBC over twenty years ago, was about four aliens who were on a trip to Earth, a planet they look at with contempt and disinterest. She is credited on 96 of the NBC sitcom's 139 episodes. "She was raucous, funny, endearing, and terribly, terribly sweet", Beaver wrote. "Goodnight, Mrs Dubcek, wherever you are".

On top of working in comedy, the star worked on and off Broadway before breaking into acting after she moved to Los Angeles.

Wendel parlayed her 3rd Rock success to subsequent TV runs on NYPD Blue, George Lopez and General Hospital.

Since then she appeared in a string of hit TV shows - including Seinfeld and Murder She Wrote.

However, mainstream recognition would arrive for Wendel after she landed on 3rd Rock from the Sun to play the role of Mrs. Dubcek, the vivacious young-at-heart landlady to the show's covert extraterrestrial Solomon family.

Elmaire was born on a farm in Howard County, Iowa, one of five siblings, and spent her childhood traveling with her musical parents and dancing with her sisters.

Her final role was a vocal appearance in the 2015 Bethesda Game Studios video game Fallout 4.
