So, you can imagine their joy when Springsteen paid a surprise visit to Billy Joel's 100th show at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night as the Associated Press reports. The legendary artists then launched into Springsteen's "Born to Run".

Even as Joel was introducing The Boss-as an Oscar victor, Grammy winner and (recently) Tony winner-shouts of "Bruce" resounded around the stadium, peaking when Springsteen finally emerged to take his place at center stage and help Joel and company rip through his classics "10th Avenue Freeze Out" and "Born to Run".

"Congratulations Billy on your 100th show", Springsteen told Joel before climbing atop his piano and launching into renditions of several hits, including "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" and "Born to Run". Joel started performing a monthly residency at the arena in 2014.

"Good evening to you New York City", said Joel, whose 2-year-old daughter, Della Rose Joel, sat on his lap.

A banner celebrating Joel's 100th performance at MSG rose to the ceiling near the top of the two-hour-plus concert. He also celebrated the milestone moment with performances of "This Is the Time", "Uptown Girl", and "New York State of Mind", all while shifting between instruments like the piano, harmonica, and guitar.

Earlier on Wednesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo proclaimed July 18, 2018, as "Billy Joel Day".

Joel first performed at Madison Square Garden on December 14, 1978. His piano is on display in front of the venue.
