At least eight people were injured in an assault by a man wielding a knife on a bus in northern Germany, police and witnesses said on Friday.

Duerbrook said authorities were still trying to determine the circumstances of the attack.

One eyewitness reportedly told Lübecker Nachrichten: "The passengers jumped off the bus and screamed".

Police say a suspect has been arrested. "Nothing can be ruled out, including a terrorist background", she was quoted as saying. Hingst said it wasn't clear whether it belonged to the suspect, but said there had been reports of smoke coming out of it. "We can not now rule anything out".
