Bloomberg, which also tracks the net worth of Jeff Bezos and other billionaires but calculates wealth differently and only updates its list after the market closes each day, puts the fortunes of both Bezos and Gates a bit lower.

It's worth noting that Gates has given away such large chunks of his fortune that he would actually have around the same net worth as Bezos if he still owned all of those assets: billions of dollars and more than 700 Microsoft shares.

Although Bezos has since fallen back to a measly $145 billion net worth from his peak this morning, his rank as the world's richest person has been on-and-off since July 2017.

Bezos, 54, has now topped Gates in inflation-adjusted terms.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos reached a new milestone Monday, becoming the richest person in modern history as his net worth surged past $150 billion. The company's share price was US$1,825.73 at 11:10 NY, extending its 2018 gain to 56 per cent and giving Bezos a US$150.8 billion fortune. His net worth was estimated to have grown by $52 billion this year. It also puts Bezos's personal fortune within spitting distance of the Walton family's $151.5 billion, which is the world's richest dynasty. "It's such a staggering number".

A Federal Reserve report found the top 1 per cent of US families controlled 38.6 per cent of wealth in the 2016, compared with 22.8 per cent held by the bottom 90 per cent. Last year, Oxfam International found that more than 80 percent of earnings went to the top 1 percent of the world population.

But Bezos is at the moment around 60 percent richer than Gates, who is only worth $95 billion today.

He's been giving to charitable foundations since the 1990s and even founded his namesake Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that works to better healthcare and reduce extreme poverty.
