Mrs. Trump, 48, wore a navy blue sleeveless Calvin Klein calf-length dress with white and green detail on one collarbone and white Christian Louboutin heels with their trademark red soles.

Trump and his wife were expected to attend a dinner Wednesday at the Art & History Museum overlooking a large park, the Parc du Cinquantenaire.

There, she and 10 other spouses were given a tour of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, a training center for gifted young musicians housed in a modernistic glass building. The president does not drink alcohol.

The trip marked the former model's return to the worldwide stage after she dropped out of public sight in May for almost a month, including five days in the hospital following surgery for a benign kidney condition. Melania Trump will join the president at his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels, his stops in London and Scotland, and in Finland for his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. Her husband later told reporters that she had had a "big operation" and was under doctors' orders not to fly for a month.

They also viewed an exhibit of hats by Belgian designer Fabienne Delvigne and were offered delicacies created by Herman Van Dender, a pastry maker and chocolatier who is the official supplier to the Belgian royal house.

While her husband discussed world affairs and openly critiqued his European counterparts at NATO headquarters, Trump smiled warmly at multiple photo opportunities, greeting Amelie Derbaudrenghien, who is the partner of Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, and Ingrid Schulerud, wife of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Seated between Derbaudrenghien and French first lady Brigitte Macron, Trump observed the concert of Hubay, Tchaikovsky and Piazzolla, at one point clapping prematurely with her counterparts, then smiling and continuing to listen. Other participating first ladies included Emine Erdogan of Turkey and Mojca Stropnik of Slovenia, Mrs. Trump's native country.

Stephanie Grisham, Melania Trump's communications director, said that the first lady is scheduled for an event in England to support Be Best and is to meet with Philip May, the husband of British Prime Minister Theresa May, while her husband meets Theresa May.
