The streamer led the nominations with 112, while HBO scored 108.

Donald Glover's "Atlanta" was the top comedy nominee with 16 bids, poised to take advantage of this year's absence of three-time victor "Veep".

Other drama series contenders are "Westworld" and "The Americans", nominated for its final season and with nods for stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. Sterling K. Brown, who won lead actor in a drama series past year for the show, is nominated again; he'll compete against Jeffrey Wright ("Westworld").

It was a very strong freshman class, and all five shows are back this year.

While Netflix and HBO battle it out for Emmy supremacy - with the streaming service edging the pay channel in total nominations, the first time anyone's done that this century - voters can take a bow for a slate of nominees that both spread the wealth and mostly got it right, barring a few notable exceptions and oversights.

Sandra Oh, 46 and a perennial Outstanding Supporting Actress Emmy nominee during her time on Grey's Anatomy, picked up a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on the BBC America murder mystery series Killing Eve, which makes her the first Asian actress to ever be nominated in any Lead Actress Emmy category. It has 22 nominations, followed by Saturday Night Live and Westworld with 21 each.

Only one of this year's categories, supporting actor in a drama, lacked any performers of color. Last year, Netflix was behind HBO by a full 20 nominations.

Amazon's original shows received 22 nominations, including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for the Best Comedy.

In 2017, the nominations showed significant gaps in Emmy progress. Singer John Legend has the potential to complete the EGOT (winner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award) with his nomination for "Jesus Christ Superstar Live".

"It has been another exceptional year in television marked by extraordinary storytelling from a wealth of diverse and innovative content creators", Television Academy Chairman and CEO Hayma Washington said in a statement.

Saturday Night Live's Michael Che and Colin Jost will co-host 70th Emmy Awards, airing live on Monday, Sept. 17, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
