An Illinois police officer has resigned after being criticized for not intervening as a man harassed a woman for wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt. "The investigation is ongoing and the officer involved has been assigned to desk duty pending the outcome".

Irizarry (pictured) posted a Facebook Live video as the man, who was drunk, repeatedly came up to her and yelled 'Why is she wearing that s**t?' The video, posted on Facebook, has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.

The man who was tormenting Irizarry, identified by police as Timothy Trybus, 62, has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez said in an interview it's clear to him the state's attorney did "the right thing".

Patrick Conner quit the police department of the Forest Preserves of Cook County, according to a statement from the department.

A woman who was visiting Caldwell Woods on June 14 complained that a man approached her and questioned her citizenship, telling her she shouldn't be wearing the Puerto Rico shirt, even though the Caribbean island is a US commonwealth and its residents are considered American citizens.

He added: "The United States of America is a nation that was built and thrives on diversity".

In a statement announcing Connor's resignation, officials with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County said that they planned to further address "aspects of this incident" and that they would not provide additional details until Thursday.

I hope we are all more willing than Officer Conner to take action when someone is trying to bully someone else, and I hope most Americans and I know most Americans are not like Mr. Tybus who is afflicted with both fear and ignorance and probably a substance abuse problem.

"I do not feel comfortable with him here, is there anything you can do?"

Mr Trybus continued to harangue Ms Irizarry for about 10 minutes before other officers arrived and arrested him.

'People have just as much right to be here as you do, ' she can be heard telling him in the clip.

Even Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló weighed in, saying on Twitter that he was "appalled", and that "a Puerto Rican woman was brutally harassed by a bigot while an officer did not interfere".

'If she's an American citizen, why is she wearing that s**t?' Trybus shouts.

'He failed to deescalate the situation and therefore did not ensure a citizen's safety'. This is not the America we all believe in'.
