Eyewitnesses report that the explosion was not inside the airport.

One Twitter user, Matthew Keidas, has said: "This guy says a worker at the airport said it was an explosion at the fuel depot in Cairo airport".

Egyptian state television reported that firefighters had brought the fire under control. Egyptian Civil aviation Minister Younis Al Masry confirmed this as the probable cause, saying that two fuel tanks were involved.

The explosion could be heard from Heliopolis to Rehab areas in Cairo.

While flights have not been affected, some witnesses described the auto traffic in and out of the airport as a "nightmare".

"The explosion, which took place just outside of Cairo airport, although near it, caused navigation to be stopped at the airport, according to sources, as a precautionary act, and the airport will open its gates shortly", Egyptian member of parliament Mustafa Bakri wrote. In 2015, the faction managed to smuggle a bomb on board Metrojet Flight 9268 before it left Sharm El Sheikh International Airport on the peninsula, which led to the destruction of the aircraft in flight and the deaths of all 244 passengers and crew on board.
