Thankfully, Steve "Frosty" Weintraub of Collider recently sat down with the WALK THE LINE and SIGNS star with the hope of discovering what brings a smile to the face of the man set to play the next Clown Prince of Crime. "So, in some ways, the process, which is obviously reading a script and meeting a filmmaker and then continuing to have meetings and discussions with Todd [Phillips]".

The Joker origin story is expected to be a darker film, and could hit theatres in 2019. "It might as well be the thing that scares you the most", Phoenix confessed.

"I wouldn't quite classify this as like any genre". I wouldn't say it's a superhero movie, or a studio movie or a. It makes you wonder if Phoenix is a fan of BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, which gave us one of the best Joker origin tales to date by presenting the sad and twisted tale of a would-be comedian who falls in with the wrong crowd and later loses his sanity in a Value-Added Tax of boiling chemicals. Phoenix said he focuses more on whether the director will be happy with his performance, since the general audience's approval of him is simply a "magnified version of what you deal with as an actor". So, when you get a script, obviously, the writer- usually for me, it's the writer/director, last several years I've worked with a filmmaker that was the writer and director- and they have their expectation, and they've imagined things in their head, and they've imagined different actors, and suddenly you take it on and so there's this moment of anxiety of Did I live up to their expectations?

"I think, underneath the excitement of these films, and the size of them, there are these incredible characters that are dealing with real life struggles", he continued.

Phoenix, who was widely reported to be one of the leading contenders to play Doctor Strange at Marvel before Benedict Cumberbatch got the role, has apparently had an interest in approaching comic book roles in a new way for some time. "And so I think that's what Todd sees appealing about this idea". Phoenix wanted to make a low budget character study about a superhero villain.

If you're just finding out about this Joker movie, it's not part of the established DC Extended Universe, but will instead offer a unique spin on the comic's character in a one-off feature. So I was trying to think of other characters, and he said I'll set up a general meeting with Warner Bros. So I completely forgot about it, and so then I heard about this idea, I was like, Oh that's so exciting, that's the kind of experience I wanted to have, with a movie based on a comic character. Whether it be politics, the environment, Star Wars movies, or nearly any subject out there, you have people arguing about it online and in public, and it can get uncomfortable really fast.

It seems that Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips are exactly on the same page for the Joker Origin movie, which makes it all that much more exciting for fans.
