Bruce Miller, executive producer of "The Handmaid's Tale", acknowledged that the show's vision of a theocracy where women are treated as property was hard to watch. Though Graham didn't earn an Emmy bid for the long-running HBO series, the show is nevertheless up for Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actor (Larry David) and twice for Best Comedy Guest Actor (Lin-Manuel Miranda and Bryan Cranston).

The news was not so good for Nicole Kidman at Thursday's Emmy nomination ceremony in Los Angeles.

Following HBO and Netflix is the most traditional network of them all, NBC, which has a total of 78 nominations including 21 just for this season of Saturday Night Live and four for the night Donald Glover hosted.

HBO, which was recently acquired by wireless carrier AT&T Inc, had 108 nominations, and noted in a statement that it was the eighth year it had gathered 100 nominations or more. Game Of Thrones was the dominant series.

Other Australians who missed out on nominations included Portia de Rossi (Arrested Development), Hugo Weaving (Patrick Melrose), Elizabeth Debicki (The Tale) and Jim Jefferies (The Jim Jefferies Show).

The nominees for best drama series were The Handmaid's Tale; Game of Thrones; This Is Us; The Crown; The Americans; Stranger Things; and Westworld.

The return of "Thrones" did tighten the race up on the drama side, but the absence of "Veep" from contention this year didn't seem to do much to help on the comedy side.

For lead actor drama, the Television Academy nominated Jason Bateman, "Ozark"; Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright, "Westworld"; Matthew Rhys, "The Americans"; and Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia of "This is Us".

It comes as fellow Australian actresses Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts failed to receive any Emmy nominations for their recent TV performances.
