First trailer of new Mary Queen of Scots movie is released

With thanks to secret on-location shots, drastic makeovers and Hollywood's love affair with young prodigy Saoirse Ronan - the long-awaited Mary, Queen of Scots has gained quite a substantial amount of hype over the past few months. She tries to rule in Scotland, but there are tensions with her cousin Elizabeth.

Robbie is almost unrecognizable as the Queen driven to madness by the arrival of Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan), who asserts her claim to the English throne.

Here's the full synopsis: Mary, Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Mary Stuart returns to her native land at age 18 after her husband, the king of France, dies. Margot Robbie plays Elizabeth I who reigns over Scotland and England as the Protestant Queen. Mary keeps bringing up her claim to the English throne, and violence ensues.

Both now must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence.

The cast also includes Jack Lowden (Dunkirk, England is Mine), Joe Alwyn (The Sense of an Ending, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk), Martin Compston (Sweet Sixteen, Line of Duty), Gemma Chan (Captain Marvel), Ismael Cordova (The Catch), Ian Hart (The Terror), Adrian Lester (Riviera), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey, Me Before You).

Based on the biography by John Guy, the film is directed by theatre director Josie Rourke from a screenplay by Beau Willimon, best-known as the creator of 'House of Cards'. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones - and change the course of history.
