THR reports and we at Collider can confirm that after meeting with over 70 potential filmmakers, Cate Shortland has signed on to direct the standalone superhero pic that will star Scarlett Johansson.

The long process to find a Black Widow director was apparently close to concluding in June, when Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) were reportedly high up on a list of finalists that also included Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry). When it hits theaters, it will be only the second movie in the MCU to focus on a solo female hero.

"Shortland, who hails from Australia and does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer".

The actress admired Shortland's handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that tells of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied army rolls in. Black Widow, in the this summer's biggest blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War.

While not a lot is known about the film itself, the word is that it will be a prequel set before the films in Marvel Phase 1, and show the early days of Natasha Romanoff, but that is just pure hearsay at this time. Have you seen Berline Syndrome and Lore, and if so, do you think Shortland's a strong choice for the job?

Stay tuned for further updates on the Black Widow movie as they become available.
