In April, John Oliver, host of HBO's Last Week Tonight, sent the DeBarr, Anchorage store a significant amount of Russell Crowe memorabilia purchased from the actor's divorce auction, including the jockstrap from the 2005 boxing film Cinderella Man, in a last-ditch bid to keep the store open.

Daymude says the buzz from the Oliver connection brought business to the store.

With the shuttering of the two Alaska locations, that leaves one lone Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, as the last holdout of the company's years-long demise. Most of the US stores closed shop soon after that.

"We have a great customer base", he said, "and it kills us to tell these customers that we're having to close down". "We have thought of you as family for the past 28 years ..." "We have a bunch of 19-year-olds working here - it's fun explaining to them what a floppy disk is". Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years. "I can't thank John Oliver or his show enough". "Last two Blockbusters in Alaska are closing".

The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 and parent firm Dish Network started closing USA stores in 2013. At that time, Border chose to stop renewing any Blockbuster store leases, resulting in a series of closures across the state over the past nine months. The company's North Pole location closed in March, leaving only five locations left at that time.

Texas and Alaska used to be popular locations for Blockbuster because of the poor quality of high-speed internet service and high prices.

Daymude said the items will be returned to the owner of the stores.
