Simon, looking for his third Grand Slam quarter-final at the age of 33, secured the first break of the match to take a 4-3 lead in the second set when Del Potro netted a return.

Novak Djokovic admits he is "grateful" to Wimbledon for scheduling his quarter-final match with Kei Nishikori on Centre Court.

"I think it was great quality tennis and in the final set there were some fantastic points", said Nadal who was a 7-5 6-7 4-6 6-4 6-4 victor.

The 31-year-old will play either second-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal or fifth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in the last four. So far the four matches have been really, really good for me'.

It nearly looked like Djokovic ended up giving Nishikori the point on the ensuing backhand, because when you've earned it you've earned it. Djokovic has been looking like his old self again this Wimbledon, but you have to think there's a voice in the back of his head wondering why this keeps happening to him.

"I've been building the last couple of weeks on the level of tennis that I've played the last couple of month, the last couple of clay-court tournaments and Queen's".

'I don't think it would have changed if I played there previous year, ' the 20-time Grand Slam champion said. I feel like a lot of aspects of my game can give him a lot of trouble'.

Nishikori, playing Djokovic on grass for the first time and seeking to end a 12-match losing streak against the Serb, held his own in the third set before running out of steam.

"Do you think I ruined the court?" he bellowed at Ramos.

With his 24th seeded opponent saving three break points to hold serve at 2-1, Djokovic bounced his racket off the baseline in frustration and then seethed after he was given a code of conduct warning.

Novak Djokovic just lost his cool in the Wimbledon heat.

He then let rip at Ramos for failing to sanction Nishikori for a similar act in the fourth set.

Friday's fixture will be Djokovic's first major semi-final since he finished runner-up at the 2016 U.S. Open, which also happens to be the last Grand Slam in which Nishikori made it past the last eight.

"Double standards, my friend".

But the 12th seed was not to be denied as he raced into the last four, hitting an impressive 40 winners on the way.
