Canadian stock market rising

Canada's main stock market continued up Tuesday due to gains in energy and consumer sectors.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 270.66 points to 24,727.14.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index rose 80.56 points, or 0.49 percent, to close the day at 16,452.34 points.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 76.38 cents U.S., up from Friday's average value of 76.31 cents US.

The August crude contract was up 22 cents to US$74.07 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was down two cents to US$2.81 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract closed down $11 at US$1,244.40 an ounce and the September copper contract was down 10 cents at US$2.74 a pound.
