Hoover and Mirutenko were celebrating their one-year wedding anniversary with three other couples and were trying to dine at as many Michelin-star restaurants as possible, reported CNN affiliate WLS in Chicago, where the woman's family lives.

An American woman celebrating her first anniversary with her husband in Mexico City was fatally shot as she was leaving a restaurant Saturday.

The intended target was another patron at the taqueria, a 46-year-old bouncer who worked at a bar in another Mexico City neighborhood, the Mexico City prosecutor's office said. But, a bullet struck Mirutenko in the head.

Investigators have surveillance footage of the gunmen, which shows them fleeing toward Mexico state, the statement said.

Authorities say Tatiana Mirutenko of San Francisco was killed Saturday as she left a taco restaurant in Mexico City's wealthy Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood. "I'd give my life if she could just come back", she told KGO-TV. "The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is providing all appropriate consular services to her family", the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs said in a statement to KTVU.

"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased".

Mirutenko, an investor relations analyst with Nektar Therapeutics in San Francisco, was described as a "fiercely loyal friend" and "rising star". Natalie Mirutenko told ABC News her daughter had told her "how wonderful, how safe it was". "Today, we were looking at flowers for the funeral".

"She always went out of her way to make me feel special", Roma said. Mexico was a common vacation destination for the Mirutenko family and a place Tatiana loved, her father said. Four states in the country-Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Michoacán and Guerrero-suffered a record 29,000 deaths a year ago. "She was always willing to help on any project across the company and had an incredibly strong work ethic", Ruddock said. The government also warns tourists to "exercise increased caution" when visiting Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Mexico City. "Many throughout Nektar, and outside the company, valued her positive energy, insight and sheer enthusiasm for life".

Her body will be flown from Mexico back to Chicago, where she will be buried, on Tuesday.
