Joker Origin Film Starring Joaquin Phoenix Gets Greenlight

The studio describes the upcoming Joker movie as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale", The Hollywood Reporter reported Tuesday.

$55 million is not very much for a film that will be part of a superhero franchise, possibly leading to something quite interesting with the finished product.

The three-time Oscar nominee has some big shoes to fill, following fan-adored interpretations of Batman's arch nemesis from Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Cesar Romero and even Mark Hamill's animated version. The plan is for the pic to be released under a new DC banner. After weeks of speculation, Phoenix recently finalized the deal with Warner Bros. and filming is set to start in September.

Warner Bros. has given the go ahead on Todd Phillips' "Joker" origin film with Joaquin Phoenix closing his deal to star.

There are also rumours that the tone will be more akin to that of a crime drama, rather than something more formulaic typically found in the genre.

Pictures announced today that Joaquin Phoenix will star in an origin story of one of DC's most notorious Super-Villains, the Joker.

"It's kind of built into the source material in some ways". Last month, it was announced that Warner developing a solo movie surrounding Jared Leto's Joker, which would exist within the DCEU world.
