Whatsapp New Salvo Against Fake News!

As seen, the suspicious link will be marked with a red label and a second warning will be displayed upon opening the link.

Owing to the recent news features WhatsApp has been getting, the giant is introducing a new feature in their next update (version 2.18.206).

Whenever any such link is shared which is originating from a spam and fake news website, then a red color warning label will be attached along with the link. WhatsApp will also warn the users with a message about the suspicious link as follows: "This link contains unusual characters".

While forwarding the link to a group or any other user, the alert shall be shown once again. The report highlights that WhatsApp will analyse the link locally and not data will be sent to WhatsApp servers in order to detect the suspicious link.

Last week, we had reported that Whatsapp is offering upto $50,000 grant to social scientists inorder to discover ways to stop the madness of fake news.

The Facebook-owned messaging service has been under huge pressure to curb the spread of misinformation in India after the lynching of more than 20 people accused of child abduction in the last two months. In the ad Whatsapp says that technology companies, the government, and community groups must come together to fight fake news.

The instant messenger has said that users will now get to know if a shared message has been typed or forwarded and existing group admins will be able to get demoted to a member with limited rights.

In a list of "easy tips", WhatsApp has announced that they are rolling out a new feature using which users can distinguish forwarded messages so that they can double check facts in case they are not sure who wrote the original message. The name itself tells it explicitly that the feature will help users to detect sent and received suspicious links to any web page which WhatsApp determines to be malicious.
