Prime members in Australia will get free delivery on millions of local and global items, access to exclusive and award-winning Prime Original series and other popular movies and TV shows with Prime Video, access to more than 1,000 e-books with Prime Reading, benefits for gamers with Twitch Prime, and access to discounted priority delivery. A Prime subscription costs $4.99 in Australia with an introductory offer that runs until 31 January 2019 before rising to $6.99.

"We are really proud to bring Australians the most extensive set of Prime benefits at launch for any country - ever".

Prime also offer free standard worldwide delivery on orders over $49, as well as typical Prime perks including access to the Prime Video streaming service.

Members will get free delivery on certain products within two-days across most of the country and four-day delivery in remote areas.

However, the company has faced criticism from shoppers for a relatively thin product range and uncompetitive prices.

Amazon's vice-president of Prime International, Jamil Ghani, said in a statement that Prime in Australia would offer free international delivery on products sold on Amazon's United States website, which shoppers could order on the Australian site, circumventing the geoblocking.

The launch of Amazon Prime in Australia turns the heat up further on local retailers with the United States giant taking away some of the costs and inconvenience of waiting for delivery when shopping online.

With Prime, Australians will have access to approximately 4 million items sold on the U.S. site that they won't have to pay shipping for as long as orders total more than AU$49. The e-commerce giant announced the start of Prime after the close of share trading. Amazon says around 90 percent of Australians will have access to two-day delivery.
