Hours after a last-minute broadside from President Donald Trump, South Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Sanford lost his primary race on Tuesday night, according to The Associated Press, possibly ushering in an end to a political career plagued by a major scandal. One ad said "it's time for Mark Sanford to take a hike - for real this time".

"He is MIA and nothing but trouble", Trump tweeted, adding, "He is better off in Argentina".

While Sanford had already expressed reservations at his chances of winning, Trump's tweet appeared to be the nail in his coffin. He won the Charleston-based congressional seat in a special election, and established himself as a fiscally conservative, libertarian-leaning voice and member of the House Freedom Caucus.

Another House race worth watching is in SC, where Archie Parnell is poised to win the Democratic primary in the 5th District despite admitting to domestic abuse in the 1970s.
