The U.S. Open returns to Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York, this week for the first time since 2004.

Woods hit an iron off the tee and found the fairway, but his approach to the green at the 407-yard par-4 flew over the green and stopped in the rough.

The tough layout and breezy conditions took their toll on the majority of the field, with the high-profile grouping of McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson a combined 25 over par for their first rounds. He three-putted his first hole - the 10th - and made a triple bogey on the 11th when his bunker shot went over the green and his subsequent chip came back to his feet.

Matthew Southgate, playing in the first group, began with a ideal 295m drive on the par-four 10th and made a triple bogey as his second from 100m went over the green and two consecutive chip shots came back to his feet.

But he missed the seventh green long and left and lipped out from four feet to drop back to nine over, and the 2011 champion looked a forlorn figure on his final hole as he needed three putts to get down from the back of the green.
