"We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks", Pompeo said, describing a far more modest goal than Trump had outlined days earlier. And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo briefed reporters today.

Mr Trump will leave the country that same evening to return to the US.

It would've been hard to imagine the two leaders reaching this point just nine months ago. Kim then called Trump a "mentally deranged United States dotard" and a "frightened dog". They threatened each other with nuclear war.

The stakes remain dizzyingly high and the developments are likely to come rapid-fire. A final working lunch with Kim is planned to conclude the summit.

Tuesday's meeting, convened at a luxury hotel on the island of Sentosa, comes just three months after Trump accepted North Korea's invitation for talks on the spot.

Trump and Kim are scheduled to start their meeting at around 9:00 am local time, and they will spend the next hour talking directly, accompanied only by their translators, before they allow their advisers and staff to join the meeting.

"I think of myself as American", he said.

Benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury notes US10YT=RR last fell 2/32 in price to yield 2.9645 percent, from 2.957 percent late on Monday.

Investors were more focused on the start of a two-day policy meeting of the Federal Reserve, looking for hints as to whether the US central bank would move to raise rates three or four times this year.

In March, Trump stunned the world by agreeing to meet Kim after South Korean officials told him that North Korea would suspend missile and nuclear tests, tolerate American military drills and move towards denuclearisation.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump has dangled the carrot of a normalisation of diplomatic ties between the former foes and even a White House visit for Kim, which would confirm his arrival on the world stage.

The North Korean delegation included Kim Yong Chol, a top aide to Kim Jong-un who recently met Trump at the White House.

The US is also concerned about the proliferation of North Korea's weapons and the infrastructure supporting its nuclear programme, and will want those issues addressed as part of any deal. Trump is pushing for complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation - considered the gold standard among arms control experts.

U.S. and North Korean officials huddled throughout Monday at the Ritz-Carlton hotel ahead of the sit-down aimed at resolving a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

And as they emerged from the meal for a brief stroll together, Trump appeared to delight in showing his North Korean counterpart the interior of "The Beast", the famed US presidential limousine known for its high-tech fortifications.

But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

How likely is a breakthrough agreement?

Here in futuristic Singapore, however, Kim was able to view the benefits of economic advancement at close range.

But some question why Kim should trust any guarantees given Trump's history of pulling out of accords - most recently the painstakingly negotiated Iran nuclear deal.

A formal end to the Korean war may also be discussed.

In 2014, Trump tweeted dismissively about the possibility that he and Rodman would someday travel to North Korea together.

However, when Mike Pompeo met Mr Kim in Pyongyang earlier this year, translations were provided by Andrew Kim - a Korean-American who formerly served for the Central Intelligence Agency in Seoul.

"These pundits, who have called me wrong from the beginning, have nothing else they can say!"

At the conclusion of the summit, Trump hailed the talks as a historic, and personal, achievement.
