"There's no bigger sporting event than the World Cup, and Nashville will be ready to host the best soccer players and fans on the planet eight years from now", Mayor David Briley said.

"On behalf of our United bid ... thank you so very much for this incredible honor", Carlos Cordeiro, the president of the U.S. Soccer Federation, noted after the announcement.

The joint bid had been the front-runner for the 48-team tournament from the moment a North American coalition was first mooted two years ago, and there have been spells when it has looked like the only credible candidate.

In the closing days before the vote, Trump ― who won't be president during the 2026 World Cup, even if he wins re-election in 2020 ― promised that visiting players and fans would not face visa problems around the tournament.

The game was screened by ITV in the United Kingdom, with host Mark Pougatch joined by Gary Neville, Slaven Bilic, Ian Wright and Lee Dixon - not that many watching actually noticed who the pundits were.

North America's "United" bid secured the World Cup hosting rights after a vote by Federation Internationale de Football Association member nations today (June 13). The United States will host the remaining 60, including the final. The vote marks the first time that Federation Internationale de Football Association has accepted a three-nation bid for the soccer championship.

The opening game of the World Cup attracts a global audience of up to one billion people, so it is a real shame that Russian Federation 2018 starts with a game that is unlikely to provide a fitting prelude for what is to come.

Canada will host men's World Cup matches for the first time, while Mexico gets its first taste of the event since 1986.

It followed a campaign centered around record crowds, existing venues and a forecast revenue of $14.3 billion (£10.6 billion/€12.1 billion).

"Hosting a FIFA World Cup is an extraordinary honor and privilege", said Steven Reed, President of Canada Soccer and Co-Chair of the United Bid, in a statement. American soccer officials downplayed the influence of politics on the bid.
