Russian Federation open World Cup 2018 with thumping win over Saudi Arabia

Cheryshev completed his brace for Russian Federation in stoppage time with a superb volley with the outside of his left foot to make it 4-0.

Host Russia made a ideal start to their World Cup campaign beating Saudi Arabia 5-0 in their opening Group A match at Luzhniki stadium in Moscow on Thursday.

Alan Dzagoev left the game after just 23 minutes as he suffered a hamstring injury, but super sub Cheryshev ensured that the home side stretched their lead going into the interval.

43rd minute. Goal. Russia.

The host nation took a commanding 2-0 lead into the break with Saudi Arabia yet to have a shot on target. With the goal at his mercy Cheryshev proceeded to blast the ball into the roof of the net from about 12 yards for his first goal for his country.

FIFA World Cup 2018 action will start on Thursday with the two weakest teams in the tournament. The match is the first game of the tournament. Golovin floats the ball from the right flank as the midfielder rises above the Saudi defense to head the ball into bottom right corner. With Russia on the counterattack and a three-on-two advantage, he picked the ball up on the inside-left channel from Fedor Smolov.
