Microsoft has announced that it's giving its flagship Office suite a makeover created to deliver a balance of "power and simplicity". Created to make the apps look more modern, the new icons are built as scalable graphics "so they render with crisp, clean lines on screens of any size", Microsoft says.

Most notably, the company is redesigning the ribbon, the controversial tabbed toolbar implementation that made its debut in 2007, with new Fluent Design features.

Before users type a query into Outlook's search box, for example, the application will offer recommendations generated by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and Microsoft Graph, a collection of APIs that deliver contextual information to users based on employee information and content stored across Microsoft's business software and cloud offerings. The features which the new update will carry resemble the ones found in the Office 365 subscription. The new Office 2019 for Mac will encompass features which will be liked by both the end users and the IT department.

It starts with a simplified ribbon that's meant to help users focus on their work and collaborate naturally with others. The new look, Microsoft says, sports a cleaner and simpler look while giving users the ability to customize it with the tools they use most, mimicking the experience of pinning items to your taskbar in Windows.

Microsoft's not sure it has this right and has acknowledged that lots of users have "muscle memory" for the current Ribbon, so the three-line version will only ever be a click away. There is also going to be a word translator, improved inking functionality, customisable Office ribbons, and overall accessibility improvements in Microsoft Office Word 2019 edition. Starting in July, it will be available in Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac in August. Microsoft plans to roll it out to commercial users of Outlook on the web in August.

Lastly, Microsoft is planning to place a much larger emphasis on search within its Office apps. This will allow IT admins to control the roll out Office updates across all their devices. Microsoft recently announced that it will release several updates for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. This feature is already available for commercial users in, SharePoint Online, and the Outlook mobile.
