Iran ‘highly sceptical’ on US-N Korea nuclear talks

The North has presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to the country's neighbours and the United States as a logical next step and completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent in response to what Pyongyang says is a policy of "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.

"President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong-un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", said a joint statement issued after their historic summit in Singapore on Tuesday.

In the latest twist in the drama-filled talks, Mr Trump announced overnight that he would be leaving Singapore early because the negotiations had moved "more quickly than expected".

After a handshake, they were soon smiling and holding each other by the arm, before Trump guided Kim to the library where they held a meeting with only their interpreters.

In the lead up to the summit, North Korea rejected any unilateral nuclear disarmament, and KCNA's reference to denuclearisation of the peninsula has historically meant that Pyongyang wants the United States to remove its "nuclear umbrella" protecting South Korea and Japan.

By prominently showing the Air China jet that flew Kim to Singapore, the reports also made no secret of China's important role behind the scenes. And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought to keep expectations for the summit in check. "If diplomacy does not move in the right direction ... those measures will increase".

South Korean media says Kim went there with his sister Kim Yo Jong and other top deputies.

It would be the first summit between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

Earlier today, Trump met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana house.

As Trump and Lee sat down for a working lunch at the Istana house, Trump sounded optimistic, telling Lee, "we've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".

Even so, the summit continues to be a sensitive topic in North Korea and it is hard - even more so than usual - to get people to express opinions about it.

The topics on the table at the Kim-Trump summit have remained largely a mystery. Others complained about the traffic jams in downtown Singapore.

"Without the lifting of sanctions, the DPRK can not exist as a normal state that normally engages in global trade and financial transactions", said Lee from Kyungnam University.

"It is our contribution to an worldwide endeavour which is in our profound interest", he told reporters.

As Kim Jong Un arrived in Singapore for a historic summit with USA officials, it became clear that North Korean president Kim Jung Un was not going to miss out on the opportunity to do a spot of sightseeing.

Aware that the eyes of the world were on a moment many people never expected to see, Kim said many of those watching would think it was a scene from a "science fiction movie".

A group of North Korean security staff were seen coming back into the hotel with cardboard boxes, one with McDonald's takeaway.
