The U.S. men's national team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, but American soccer just received a massive boost: On the eve of the sport's biggest spectacle, FIFA members voted to award the 2026 World Cup jointly to the United States, Mexico and Canada. Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

As a player nothing could possibly beat playing in front of your own fans in your own country at the World Cup and I hope our players of the future will be fortunate enough to experience this.

Sophie Schmidt played on Team Canada during the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup and recalls the buzz around the stadium and the tournament. Morocco's bid garnered a score of 2.7, along with a stark warning from the inspection team that "the amount of new infrastructure required for the Morocco 2026 bid to become reality can not be overstated".

"The people of North America have always welcomed me".

The United States proposed staging 60 out of the 80 games at the 2026 World Cup, the first edition of the tournament that will include 48 teams.

Bid leader Cordeiro said his team was "humbled" by the result and predicted the tournament would put football "on a new and sustainable path for generations to come". The attractive game transcends borders and cultures. "The reality is in the United States on the men's side, we have a lot of competition with three or four other sports; we're not at the top yet". "Football today is the only victor".

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is now just one day away, and as part of our countdown, we looked at the best No. 1s in the tournament's history, including two legendary Brazilians!

"If we are one of the cities chosen - which we think we will be - then we are looking at 6 or 8 games here at the Hard Rock, so you are looking at about a month long event", Gimenez said. "We'll have discussions with U.S. Soccer about what happens next".

The United States last hosted the men's World Cup in 1994.

Anxious that rivals might try to turn the vote into a referendum on Trump, who is deeply unpopular in many parts of the world, organizers of the North American bid took pains to dissociate their efforts from politics. "We've got 23 fantastic venues across three countries, obviously supported by wonderful infrastructure, and hundreds and thousands of years of common culture - we share each other's languages, each other's food".
