Boring Company to build Chicago high-speed airport link

The Boring Company, Elon Musk's infrastructure and tunneling business, has been selected by the City of Chicago to build and run a high-speed underground link between O'Hare International Airport and downtown Chicago.

Adam Collins, a spokesman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel, confirmed in a tweet the selection of The Boring Company Wednesday night. Emmanuel's goal is to transport travelers from the airport to Chicago's center in 20 minutes or fewer, and at roughly a third of the cost of an expensive taxi or ride-sharing app. Two companies, including The Boring Company, advanced past the second "Request for Proposals" stage in March.

According to the Boring Company's website, its service will cut the journey time to 12 minutes, which would be "three to four times faster than existing transportation systems" that serve the airport.

The company and the city are entering the negotiation phase.

The Boring Company said it will fund the project in its entirety, and that it plans to collect ticket and advertising revenue. The plan comes in response to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's request past year for proposals to build and operate a high-speed rail line that will whisk passengers from the airport to downtown in 20 minutes or less. Maryland's Department of Transportation gave conditional approval to the construction of a tunnel from Baltimore to Washington for a super-high-speed transportation system, The Washington Post reported in October.

Passengers will hop into an eight to 16-seat vehicle travelling up to 150 miles per hour through The Boring Company's 12-feet-wide tunnels, sitting 30 to 60 feet underground.

While they won their bid with the city, the local government is not contributing any money to the project and The Boring Company will have to finance it itself and recuperate its cost through fares - virtually becoming a private mass-transit company.

An overall project costs and construction timeline will be finalized during this process.

The SpaceX, Tesla and Boring Company CEO is set to talk tunnels Thursday in Los Angeles. This trip usually takes approximately 30-40 minutes, whether by train via Chicago's Blue Line, or by cab, Uber or Lyft.

The Boring Company is already working on a Loop transportation system in Los Angeles.
