Trump's Freeze of Korea Joint Exercises Catches Allies by Surprise

Trump's announcement also appeared to surprise both the US and South Korean militaries, who said they hadn't received any instruction to cease the joint military drills, including the Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises scheduled to take place this fall.

"I think what the vice president said today - and we'll continue to clarify what the president had talked about - exercises will continue with South Korea", Gardner said during a news conference with other GOP leaders.

About 29,000 U.S. soldiers are based in the South, under a security agreement reached after the war ended in 1953.
