The victim was a 50-year-old man named Bobby Messett who was killed Tuesday morning inside a boxing club in Bray, a small town in Wicklow, some 20 km from the Irish capital. "He has left a huge void in our lives that will never be filled again".

Two other men, including Pete Taylor, father of Irish Olympic gold medal-winning boxer Katie Taylor, were injured in the attack.

"Everyone who knew my dad Bobby knew that he was one of a kind", he said.

"He was a family man most importantly, and loved by everyone around him".

'Although we are all devastated that he was taken so cruelly and way too soon, it gives us some comfort to know that he is reunited with his ma and da, '.

Members of Mr Messett's various sports clubs - including Bray Wheelers Cycling Club and Glencormac United FC - attended wearing their respective jerseys in honour of the keen athlete.

Fr Nguyen said that mourners were gathering at the church in a shocked state.

Former Ireland global Damien Duff was also among those bidding farewell to the father-of-three. The priest then told how it was Mr Messett who had organised his mother's funeral in February, and how he would often bump into him coming to the grave to pray for his parents. Bobby Messett is being laid to rest this afternoon.

"Bobby was kind, warm, friendly, gentle, hard-working and well respected". I understand there is still a lot of uncertainty about the nature of the incident but I'm hoping the Garda will get to the bottom of it very soon.

'As many of you know, I have been somewhat estranged from my Dad for a number of years now.

Finally, to Bobby's family: You didn't deserve this heartache, I'm so sorry for your loss.

On Thursday night, Katie Taylor issued a statement in which she said she had had little contact with her father in the last three years and no contact or association whatsoever with Bray Boxing Club since 2015.

"I have been appalled by the misuse of my name and image during the reporting of this incident in the media coverage, it has been reckless and irresponsible, and a deliberate attempt to inappropriately leverage my name to sell a story".
