A Memphis, Tennessee woman was charged with child endangerment after video of her confining her grandkids to pet kennels surfaced on social media over the weekend.

She told them to sit in the kennels, usually occupied by her two puppies, for the 25 mile journey because there was no room in the back of the auto.

Temperatures in the area reached about 35 degrees Celsius. The mum is now facing charges of child endangerment.

Footage of the incident, which was sent to police by an anonymous bystander, shows the moment the woman let her grandchildren out of the kennels, which were placed in the back of her vehicle. "I only met her like once, maybe twice", neighbour Skylarr Blake told Local Memphis in an interview. "If she did that, then that's out of character for her", neighbor Eugene Richmond told WREG.

In a freaky story, a woman was arrested for driving kids around, not in booster seats or in the back seats, but in two pet kennels placed in the back of her vehicle.

Camillia Cowan, who said she was Cheeks' neighbor, according to WHBQ, was deeply troubled when she saw the video online.

According to neighbors, Cheeks just bought two German Shepherd puppies, which is why the kennels are in the back of her truck. The attention grew so rabid that the Memphis Police Department issued a statement on Facebook saying they had been contacted by many people since the video went viral on social media.

Police say the children were not harmed. "I couldn't see her actually doing that".

Cheeks was being held on Sunday in the Shelby County Jail.

During Cheeks arraignment Monday, the case was continued.
