The owner of Dixons and Carphone Warehouse today revealed hackers grabbed the details of 5.9million customers cards and 1.2million personal records.

The company said in a statement: Our investigation is ongoing and now indicates that there was an attempt to compromise 5.9 million cards in one of the processing systems of Currys PC World and Dixons'.

Most of the cards are protected by chip and pin protection, but 105,000 non-EU cards are at even higher risk of fraud. "We have no evidence of any fraud on these cards as a result of this incident", it writes.

Dixons Carphone informed Britain's data protection regulator the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), as well as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the police.

Separately, the investigation has found that 1.2m records containing non-financial personal data - such as name, address and email - had been accessed.

'We've taken action to close off this unauthorised access and though we have now no evidence of fraud as a result of these incidents, we are taking this extremely seriously.

It said there was now no evidence of any fraudulent use of the information - with the vast majority of the cards having chip and pin protection.

"We've taken action to close off this unauthorised access and though we have now no evidence of fraud as a result of these incidents, we are taking this extremely seriously". It paid 320,000 pounds as there was a 20 percent reduction for early payment.

In a statement about the breach, Dixons Carphone chief executive, Alex Baldock, said: "We are extremely disappointed and sorry for any upset this may cause". It said since the 2015 attack it had worked extensively with cyber security experts to upgrade its security systems.

"Dixons was lucky to have had the breach before the GDPR regulation became effective, and the impact of the breach on their business was limited to 5.5% fall in the share price".
