Relay for Life celebrates survivors, inspires fight against cancer

If you have never been to a Relay For Life before, it is both a celebration of life for all survivors and a time to honor those who have not survived their diagnosis. "If we get them soon enough, we can put the picture with the name in the display", she added.

Relay for Life features teams walking a track at Clearwater Park for six to 12 hours to raise money for cancer research, with at least one team member walking at all times.

A total of 75 cents of every dollar raised go towards program services, including cancer research, patient support services, prevention information and education, and early detection and treatment. Trista Worth, who is this year's publicity chair, said, "I got involved with Relay for my patients".

The event started with the opening ceremony which was lead by a flag line from the American Legion Riders from American Legion Post 180, After the opening ceremony, there was the survivors lap where people that have beat cancer takes a lap and gets cheered on. Thanks to a donation from Starved Rock Wood Products, the team is holding a kitchen cabinet raffle.

"You think it's going to be everybody else, and you're going to help everybody else". "They will go anywhere the victor is located, even out of state". "Today we will hear incredible stories of strength, courage and hope, and this entire relay runs on hope". The winning ticket will be drawn at the Relay on July 14.

The silent auction winds up at 9 p.m., as the lighting of the luminarias begins, along with a Relay for Relay. A pancake breakfast will be served after race.

Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. "I always thought if I stayed calm and just did what the doctor said, everything would work out".

"When the ones you love are diagnosed with or die from cancer, friends and family often want to do something to help or remember them. It's the survivors and caregivers that truly, truly understand the battle and the journey".
