Baby names are added to the list, when parents apply for a child's social security card. For 2017, the top five girls' names in IL were: 1.

Hover over the packed bubbles to reveal the name and popularity rank. On the girls' side, the most distinctly Californian names were No. 7 Camila (23rd in the U.S.) and No. 14 Luna (37th). To the 208 recorded Emmas in OR, 207 baby girls were named Olivia-pretty close.

On Thursday the Social Security Administration released the top 100 baby names in IL in 2017. James, while being in the top 10 nationally, came in at spot No. 4.

The agency began compiling the baby name list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880.

For boys the nation's three most popular names were Liam, Noah and William.

If you're interesting in giving your baby-to-be an unusual name, but not one off-the-charts weird, name your son Bentley. In Oregon, the other popular names included Liam, Henry and Benjamin.

The name Emma is the clear favorite so far this decade for girls. In fact, the top ten names in each category are very similar to last year's list.
