Phoenix gets 5th franchise in new Alliance football league

- The new Alliance of American Football professional football league has awarded a team to Phoenix.

The AAF will be an eight-team, 10-week league beginning February 9, the week after the Super Bowl. He was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year for the Chicago Bears.

Orlando, Salt Lake City, Atlanta and Memphis have been announced officially as cities. "The Alliance is about building a dynamic relationship between players, fans and the game, and I'm looking forward to Alliance Salt Lake being active in this community and competing for a championship". Orlando was the first city that joined the league, and its team, which will play its home games at UCF's Spectrum Stadium, will be coached by Spurrier.

Erickson went 40-56 in the NFL. After successful stints at Wyoming (1986) and Washington State (1987-88), Erickson replaced Jimmie Johnson as head coach of Miami.

Erickson led the Hurricanes from 1989-94, leading them to a 63-9 record. In 2000, the Beavers defeated Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, punctuating an 11-1 season that netted Erickson a National Coach of the Year nomination.

He was the head coach of the 49ers from 2008-10. He also coached Idaho, Oregon State and Arizona State.
