Arsenal transfer rumours: Caglar Soyuncu interest

Arsenal are seemingly set to sign young Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu.

Mikel Arteta is now widely expected to be the man tasked with filling the void left by Wenger, but it is said that the Spaniard has not been consulted regarding the signing of the Turkish defender.

The 36-year-old has already held talks with Arsenal chiefs and his appointment could now be confirmed before the start of the World Cup on June 14.

The club's head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has free rein to push through these deals as a replacement for Arsene Wenger has not been found.

Mislintat, meanwhile, has proven himself to be more than capable of completing first-team transfers, having brought Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Konstantinos Mavropanos to the club back in January, with all three proving to be impressive acquisitions. The conducting of transfer dealings over the manager's head has presented issues at other clubs, and one fan even related the situation to that of a rival club.

Though the comparisons to the Barcelona icon are indeed premature, the Gunners are certainly in need of defensive reinforcements this summer. With Per Mertesacker retiring, Laurent Koscielny struggling with age and his ailing Achilles, and now out of action until December, and Shkodran Mustafi failing to build on his first season in North London, there is reason to claim that Arsenal require some spending at the position.

Soyuncu's potential arrival at the Emirates could be just what is needed in the Gunners' efforts to add fresh impetus, solidarity and numbers to their defensive ranks ahead of next season.
