Now, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg (Deliver Us From Evil) will revisit the story with a four-hour docuseries on HBO.

The new HBO series, which does not have a debut date, is directed by Amy Berg and HBO says she's been working on it since 2015; the podcast started airing in the fall of 2014.

Maryland prosecutors are asking the state's highest court to deny a new trial for the man whose murder conviction became the subject of the popular podcast "Serial".

If you're unfamiliar with the case, the series will explore the 1999 disappearance and murder of 18-year-old student Hae Min Lee, and the conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed. No release date has been set but it will air on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom and HBO in the U.S. The series will re-examine the events that led up to Lee's 1999 murder and Sky says the series will present "ground-breaking revelations that challenge the state's case".

Syed was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 2000 for Hae Min Lee's murder.

Adnan Syed is about to be tried - again - in the court of public opinion.

Director of Programming, Sky Entertainment UK & Ireland, Zai Bennett said, "We're excited to partner with our friends at HBO to bring this fascinating and gripping case to television screens worldwide". The series also includes "exclusive access to Adnan Syed, his family and his lawyers", as Berg "has been closely following their efforts to obtain justice, with the outcome still to be determined - and possibly shaped by the investigation pursued within the series itself".
