An officer-involved shooting investigation is underway in downtown Richmond after police shot a naked man who was "running around crazy" on Interstate 95, sources told 8News. So far, the eyewitness accounts we've heard have been consistent: "our officer tried using verbal commands, then used non-lethal force first by deploying his Taser before using his service weapon".

According to Richmond Police, the incident started as a hit-and-run near the intersection of Belvidere and Franklin Streets. An officer, who witnessed the incident pursued the vehicle. That when he allegedly struck two vehicles, causing his auto to crash into nearby trees.

Police found the suspect naked after he exited his wrecked vehicle.

Crime Insider sources say the officer attempted to subdue the suspect with a Taser. The statement says the officer fired at the unarmed man only after the stun "proved ineffective".

"This doesn't happen every day, we're just trying to figure out exactly why this person did the hit and run, why he didn't have any clothes on, why he attacked our officer and forced our officer to use deadly force", Lepley said.

Peters was shot twice in the abdomen, according to WRIC. He was transported to a local medical center where he died shortly after midnight.

The officer involved in the shooting, who also remains unidentified, has been questioned and placed on leave.

This is a developing story.
