A search is underway for a hooded man who climbed through a young girl's bedroom window in the middle of the night and allegedly indecently assaulted her in Sydney's east, earlier this week.

Police allege the man broke into the Kingsford home on Barker street and spoke to the child during the assault, but could not confirm if the assault was targeted. The girl woke her mother, who then contacted police.

"This can be a very uncommon however clearly a really critical incident", Superintendent Karen McCarthy informed ABC Information.

Police on Wednesday released CCTV footage of the man using what appears to be a chair to climb into the raised ground floor window about 2.50am.

"We are working closely with the family to make sure they are well supported".

The video then shows him climbing out again some two minutes later. "The welfare of our young victim and family is of paramount importance".

Detectives from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command have taken a statement from the girl, who described the man as having an Australian or English accent and wearing a dark hooded jumper.

Police are urging anyone with information or that recognises the man in the vision to contact them immediately.
